gadget reviews : Google Nexus S Review Part 1

Google Nexus S Review Part 1
Google Nexus S Review Part 1 by Aaron Aaron reviews the Google Nexus S, the latest "Google Experience" device and the successor to the HTC Nexus One. It offers a 1 GHz processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 5-megapixel camera, and is the first device to launch with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Besides the software, the specifications aren't as revolutionary this time around. 1 GHz processors are common on high-end Android devices, and 5-megapixel cameras are a dime a dozen. The small advantage (for now) comes in the improved performance of Android 2.3. Surprisingly, it's not an HSPA+ device. Given T-Mobile's 4G marketing campaign, one would think that Google and Samsung would want to take advantage of it. Still, the HSPA connectivity has been good thus far, with download speeds in the 2-3.5 Mbps range. Aaron puts it through its paces in part 1 of a two-part review. ‪Facebook: www.facebook.com ‬ Twitter: www.twitter.com Forums: forums.phonedog.com Win Free Phones: sweeps.phonedog.com

Google Nexus S Review Part 2 by Aaron Aaron reviews the Google Nexus S, the newest "Google Experience" device and the successor to the HTC Nexus One. Besides the software, the specifications aren't as revolutionary this time around. 1 GHz processors are common on high-end Android devices, and 5-megapixel cameras are a dime a dozen. The small advantage (for now) comes in the improved performance of Android 2.3. Oddly enough, the Nexus S is not an HSPA+ device. gadget reviews : Sanyo Taho Unboxing

The Taho is a rugged featurephone option for those who need a phone that can last through anything. It meets military standards for ruggedness and features GPS navigation, a 2MP camera with a flash, and is Sprint Messaging capable. Sydney unboxes this rugged phone.

gadget reviews : LG Optimus U Unboxing

LG Optimus U Unboxing
LG Optimus U Unboxing by Aaron Aaron does an early review of the LG Optimus U, US Cellular's newest Android device. It's a nice little mid-range Android phone that looks identical to Sprint's version, the LG Optimus S. Specs include a 3.2-inch display, 3.2-megapixel camera, 1500 mAh battery, and Android 2.2 (Froyo). The Optimus U (and the other Optimus devices) is one of the best mid-range Android devices to launch this year. It's compact, relatively bloat-free (save for some LG customizations), and Android 2.2 out of the box is a really nice touch. ‪Facebook: www.facebook.com ‬ Twitter: www.twitter.com Forums: forums.phonedog.com Win Free Phones: sweeps.phonedog.com

gadget reviews : AT&T; Samsung Galaxy Tab Unboxing

AT&T; Samsung Galaxy Tab Unboxing
AT&T; Samsung Galaxy Tab Unboxing by Aaron Aaron does a first review of AT&T;'s Samsung Galaxy Tab. At $649, it's the most expensive Tab of the bunch, even though the specs are the same - 1 GHz processor, 7-inch display, front and rear cameras, 4000 mAh battery, and Android 2.2. As with the other Galaxy Tab devices, it's a nice device, and it's nice to see an Android tablet land on all four nationwide carriers (and US Cellular). Is the AT&T; version any different than the other carriers' versions? Take a look at the unboxing to find out. ‪Facebook: www.facebook.com ‬ Twitter: www.twitter.com Forums: forums.phonedog.com Win Free Phones: sweeps.phonedog.com

gadget reviews : Solstice 2 vs. Crux Dogfight

Solstice 2 vs. Crux Dogfight
Sydney compares the Samsung Solstice 2 and the Pantech Crux. Both the Solstice 2 and the Crux feature a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display as well as interesting UIs. The Crux is a little different because it has media controls and is a more media-centric device. The Solstice 2, however, has a slightly better touchscreen and a UI that has more customization features. So, say you're trying to decide which carrier you should go with, AT&T; or Verizon, or you're trying to decide if it's worth switching carriers to get one of these devices. This Dogfight will help you to decide. Sydney compares the features, specs, and performance of each device and gives you the facts.

gadget reviews : LG Cosmos Touch Review

LG Cosmos Touch Review
Sydney does a review of the LG Cosmos Touch from Verizon. It features a full touchscreen display, a 1.3 MP camera and a physical QWERTY keyboard. Not long ago, LG released the Cosmos, a mid-ranged messaging phone for Verizon. Now, LG has come back with an updated design and a new touchscreen. It retails for $79.99 on contract and after rebates. The Cosmos Touch still has a less-than-stellar 1.3 MP camera, but its touchscreen is pretty cool and very responsive and the UI is interesting and fun. It features Social Beat, as well a dedicated page for messaging, Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace, that gives you easy access to your social networks.

gadget reviews : Sanyo Taho Review

Sanyo Taho Review
The Taho is a new rugged device for Sprint. It meets military standards and is water, dust, shock, and wind resistant. Not only that, but it also sports a 2 megapixel camera with a flash. In testing, it wasn't as durable as other rugged phones we've tested, but it held up well enough. In this video, Sydney does a full review of the Taho. gadget reviews : LG Optimus M Unboxing

LG Optimus M Unboxing
Sydney takes a first look at the Optimus M for MetroPCS. The Optimus phones have worked their way onto most US carriers and now MetroPCS is getting in the Android fun. The Optimus M features a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display, a 3.2 MP autofocus camera, Android 2.2, and is powered by a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor. It is available for $229, but you don't have to worry about a contract and MetroPCS has plans as low as $40 per month. It may not have the best specs, but it's a decent mid-range Android smartphone for a good price. It packs a 600 MHz processor, 3.2-inch display, 3-megapixel camera, 1500 mAh battery, a physical QWERTY keyboard, and Android 2.1. From the browser to the touchscreen, it's exceptionally laggy, and pales in comparison to other mid-range devices like the LG Optimus U. HTC's YouTube App in Action
HTC released their own YouTube app that's now available on HTC branded Windows Phone 7 devices. It's got a much nicer interface than the native YouTube plug-in's simple link to the mobile YouTube website. This version has a nice panaramic "Metro" style design with easy access to popular videos and category sorting. It also supports video resizing and even high-quality video streaming. That's a big plus that we've been waiting for since the other YouTube apps only show low quality videos. To see the app in action, check out the video below. Unfortunately the app is missing things like comments, log-in, subscriptions, favorites, and video upload, but it's still pretty nice.

Sync Media Playback Between 3 Screens via Zune
You may have heard of Microsoft's "Three Screens and the Cloud" mantra for describing software and services that works on your television, personal computer, and mobile phone; all of which have different screens and different uses. The idea is that the three screens should work better together. Well, we've already started seeing some of this come to fruition with Windows Phone 7. The Zune desktop software will actually remember where you stopped watching a video, or podcast and sync that time code with a Windows Phone 7 that also has that video or podcast in it's storage memory. In other words, you can start watching a movie or a long podcast on your desktop, stop watching it, then sync your Windows Phone 7, and pick up watching the same thing right from where you left off while you're on the train or out and about. Then when you get home, sync the phone back up to Zune and you can continue watching the same video from the spot where you left off on the phone.

gadget reviews : Live Messenger by Miyowa with Push Notifications

Live Messenger by Miyowa with Push Notifications
I was really hoping that Microsoft would release a really great version of Windows Live Messenger for Windows Phone 7. You know, something that would have many of the same features that Live Messenger 2011 on the Zune HD has, but even more impressive. Unfortunately, we were left with nothing but a 3rd party Live Messenger app by Miyowa, who's first version was a real downer. It crashed a lot, didn't support push notifications, and occasionally did screwy things to your contact photo or display name. That app has been recently updated to version 1.2, and it has gotten much better. Now, Miyowa's Live Messenger actually supports push notifications so that you can receive instant messages even when the app is not running. I believe this is the first instant messenger on Windows Phone 7 to support push notifications, so that's great that it's finally there. The Live Tile for messenger does not support live updates though, so there' s no way of knowing how many unread messages you have waiting. It also still does not support multiple points of presence so if you log in, it's going to log you out of all of the other computers you're logged into.

3 Ways to Access Office Documents without SharePoint
On Windows Phone 7, there isn't really any way to sync Office documents to the device unless you're using SharePoint 2010. You can't even sync Office documents over through the USB cable. If you don't have SharePoint 2010, fortunately there are a few other ways for you to get Office documents like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into your phone's Office Hub. The first and silliest option is to email the files to yourself. Yes, it's pretty ridiculous, but it works. Once you download the files as attachments, you can open them in their respective Office 2010 apps, and then choose the "Save As" command from the bottom menu in order to save the files to your Office Hub. One tip offered by Todd Allcock is to create a separate free email account that's only used for transferring documents to your Windows Phone 7. The next way is to save your documents on SkyDrive as part of your Windows Live account. The Windows Phone 7 Office Hub does not support syncing with SkyDrive directly, however if you browse to your SkyDrive folder using Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7 (while in "mobile" view mode), you'll be able to download the files to your device and subsequently "Save As" into the Office Hub just like you would if you emailed them to yourself. Unfortunately there's no way to save the files back to SkyDrive. If you have your own web server, of course you can post the files there, and then download them to your phone via Internet Explorer as well. The third way to get Office

gadget reviews : SlideScreen Pro for Android, a Launcher Focused on Data

SlideScreen Pro for Android, a Launcher Focused on Data
About a decade ago, back when I was a Newton user, I saw a radically new concept for interacting with computers and PDAs. Instead of the app-centric metaphor, or desktop/filing cabinet metaphor of the day, this concept focused on your timeline. Information was presented in a cascading deck of "cards" with the front-most card being what you were working on at the present, and cards behind it what you'd worked on previously. These cards could be representative of emails, faxes, texts, phone calls, documents, spreadsheets, charts, calendar events, any any number of other representative information. Instead of opening an application, then finding and opening a particular file, you could simply flip through your deck until you found what you were looking for, or use a search engine to quickly find that you were looking for. The theory being that the most important (and most relevant information) would be closest to the top of the stack. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, the app never made it out of the concept phase, but I've been keeping my eyes open for something similar ever since. I saw SlideScreen a while ago and put it on my agenda for apps to try out. It wasn't exactly the "life stream" concept that I had seen before, but it was vaguely familiar.
