I was really hoping that Microsoft would release a really great version of Windows Live Messenger for Windows Phone 7. You know, something that would have many of the same features that Live Messenger 2011 on the Zune HD has, but even more impressive. Unfortunately, we were left with nothing but a 3rd party Live Messenger app by Miyowa, who's first version was a real downer. It crashed a lot, didn't support push notifications, and occasionally did screwy things to your contact photo or display name. That app has been recently updated to version 1.2, and it has gotten much better. Now, Miyowa's Live Messenger actually supports push notifications so that you can receive instant messages even when the app is not running. I believe this is the first instant messenger on Windows Phone 7 to support push notifications, so that's great that it's finally there. The Live Tile for messenger does not support live updates though, so there' s no way of knowing how many unread messages you have waiting. It also still does not support multiple points of presence so if you log in, it's going to log you out of all of the other computers you're logged into.
