gadget reviews : Spb Shell 3D for Android Review

Spb Shell 3D for Android Review
At last, Spb Software has released Shell 3D for Android after a year of beta testing for carriers and OEMs. Mobile Shell 3D is a full-service interface replacement for Android which rivals Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher. Is features up to eight homescreens which can be comprised of pre-configured panels like weather, clock, calendar, and time, or custom panels to which you can add shortcuts and widgets. Along the bottom there is a dock for your most frequently-used applications. There's also a neat 3D effect that lets you spin your panels in a 3D-view. Whether you like eye candy will determine whether you like Mobile Shell 3D. It's heavy on the visuals, but fun to use, and quite customizable. gadget reviews : T-Mobile G2x by LG Hands-On

T-Mobile G2x by LG Hands-On
In this video we take a look at the first dual-core on T-Mobile, the G2x by LG, which is a version of the manufacturer's Optimus 2X. Overall we find the device to be quite speedy, as its name implies, with plenty of cutting-edge features and a good-if-not-great build quality. gadget reviews : T-Mobile Nokia Astound Hands-On

T-Mobile Nokia Astound Hands-On
In this video we take a hands-on look at the upcoming Nokia Astound on T-Mobile. After we stumbled across an in-construction display for the Nokia Astound at CTIA yesterday, the phone has been formally announced and now we've had the chance to get a little hands-on time with the Symbian^3 smartphone. The menu action on the Astound (née C7) is definitely spry, with quick transitions between phone screens. The same can't be said, however, for the phone's browser, which stumbled a bit keeping up with touchscreen input. On the plus side, the phone and its browser do support multi-touch controls for pinch-to-zoom; you'll just want to keep your patience. For a higher-end phone, we might take issue with the performance, but the Astound is admittedly being presented as an entry-level smartphone, with the low price, compact size, and stylish lines that make it exemplary of the type. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to look at the image quality of the Astound's eight-megapixel camera, but did get the opportunity to browse through some of the pre-installed apps, including Fruit Ninja and Slacker radio. Of course, you'll be able to flesh those out with some of your own choosing from the Ovi Store. The Astound lands on T-Mobile on April 6 for about $80. gadget reviews : Top 5 Android Apps for Power Users: Joe Edition

Top 5 Android Apps for Power Users: Joe Edition
Brandon and Geoff have already shared their top five Android apps with you. If you missed their videos, it's well worth your time to go back and take a look! Since I focus more on hacking, slashing, and pushing your Android past what it was designed to do, I thought I'd focus on my top five apps that are a must-have for any Android power-user -- though if you don't consider yourself part of that group you should still get quite a bit of utility out of what I'll show you in my video. 1. ROM Manager (basic version: free; premium version: $4.99): If you are interested in flashing ROMs, recovery images, backing up your device, or any number of other low-level tasks, ROM Manager is the app for you. It takes much of the risk out of flashing your device, and makes the processes much easier -- though for those of us who are used to doing things "the old way" this seems a lot like cheating. bit.ly 2. Theme Chooser (free with CyanogenMod custom ROMs): T-Mobile created an awesome app for distributing with their phones called Theme Chooser. They later released it as opensource and the CyanogenMod team picked it up and included it in their custom ROMs. Using this app you can customize the look and feel of your Android-powered device. The app lets you install themes which can change a lot of the UI elements in the operating system including your status bar, icons, wallpapers, backgrounds, and even icon sets and widgets. 3. Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher EX (Launcher Pro: free

gadget reviews : iPhone vs. HTC Thunderbolt

iPhone vs. HTC Thunderbolt
The iPhone 4 and the HTC Thunderbolt are very different devices. To start things off, they're priced differently. For $199, you can get a 16GB iPhone 4 on AT&T; with a two year contract, or you can opt for the 32GB model for $299. On Verizon, the Thunderbolt will run you $249 with 32GB of data, making it a better value when you compare storage capacity alone. For data, AT&T; has the 2GB data plan for $25 per month, while on Verizon, $30 per month on your bill will get you unlimited data. In our judgement, the Thunderbolt is an overall better value. In terms of hardware, the Thunderbolt also comes out a winner, with more RAM and a processor that seems to provide better responsiveness in day-to-day operation. In terms of imaging, the rear camera 5MP camera on the iPhone 4 takes better photos and videos than the Thunderbolt, but if you're interested in video chat, the front-facing camera on the Thunderbolt seems to be a bit better. Also, if you're looking for the best screen possible, you can't beat the iPhone 4 Retina display, which provides an extremely high pixel density, making text and images clear and very crisp. The screen on the Thunderbolt gives you more room to work with, thanks to the large 4.3" size, and is also no slouch in terms of clarity, but isn't as good as the iPhone. In our tests of the web browser and YouTube app, we found the Thunderbolt to be faster. That said, the iPhone 4 has perhaps the most refined web browser of any smartphone we've tested, even if

gadget reviews : New Amazon App Store for Android

New Amazon App Store for Android
Today Amazon officially unveiled their Android application store with 3800 apps. Why did Amazon launch their own app store? There are a few reasons that we can think of. Chief among them is that Amazon wants to be a part of the huge app store industry and reap profits. Second, Amazon has a huge asset they can use to promote and sell apps...their website! And finally, Amazon already has your credit card on file, making it super easy for you to buy apps from them. So how is the app store? The interface is quite nice, but we found ourselves missing the "geeky" green color of the Android market. We were appreciate of the free offering for new Angry Birds Rio, but were quickly sobered by the overall lack of selection of apps. While there isn't a high quantity of apps, most of the basics are covered. If you happen to buy an app from the Amazon app store that you already own from the Amazon app store, you'll get a notification that will give you a chance to cancel your order, which is a good feature. Download the Amazon app store by going to amzn.to/getappstore, and let us know what you think!

gadget reviews : Pocketnow Throwback: HTC Touch Diamond

Pocketnow Throwback: HTC Touch Diamond
Website: pocketnow.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com Remember the HTC Touch Diamond? Sure you do! It was a very important device not only for HTC and Microsoft, but for the smartphone industry in general. Released in the early summer of 2008, a full year after the iPhone hit store shelves, the Touch Diamond represented an industry-wide shift from styli-centric interface design to finger-friendly usability. TouchFLO 3D from HTC made it easy to operate a Windows Mobile device with just a finger. Not only that, but it brought information out of programs and onto your main screen, so that you could easily check the weather, play music, call a contact, and more. The Touch Diamond ran with a Qualcomm 528MHz CPU with 192MB of RAM. Certainly, this looks a bit weak in comparison do devices like the Atrix 4G, which pack two 1GHz CPU cores and 1GB of RAM. The Touch Diamond was indeed a bit slow, and the resistive touchscreen lacked the responsiveness of the iPhone's capacitive screen, but it brought so many innovations to the table in a nice petite size, that it was easy to forget the minor inconveniences like low memory errors or the lack of pinch-to-zoom. Do you own a Touch Diamond? What about the phone impressed you?

Motorola Xoom User Interface Tour - Honeycomb
Honeycomb, found on the Motorola Xoom, and soon other Android tablets, has its Pros and Cons. In this video we take a tour of the Honeycomb interface and try to understand the design philosophy behind it. Here's what I like about Honeycomb: 1. Homescreen is highly customizable and serves as a great "dashboard" that makes the iPad's homescreen look archaic 2. The browser uses desktop-like browser tabs 3. The notification system is well-placed, non-obtrusive, and easy to use Here what I don't like about Honeycomb: 1. It feels like an afterthought in the grand scheme of Android. There are a lot of interface inconsistencies (smartphone apps have the menu on the bottom, Honeycomb apps have the menu on the top) 2. There are only 37 apps (at time of this video) for Honeycomb, some of which aren't even optimized for the tablet display (Kindle as an example) 3. The browser is not stable 4. The email app exhibits weird behavior Website: pocketnow.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com
