New Macbook Pro Updates: 1st Impressions
New Macbook Pro 2011: 1st Impressions For a full rundown: www.technobuffalo.com Apple announced an update to its popular line of MacBook Pro computers this morning. The laptops now have high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology (the same thing as the rumored Light Peak technology), an HD forward-facing FaceTime camera, Sandy Bridge Intel CPUs, and AMD GPUs. The SD slot on the computer now supports SDXC cards From Apple: "The new MacBook Pro brings next generation dual and quad Core processors, high performance graphics, Thunderbolt technology and FaceTime HD to the great design loved by our pro customers...Thunderbolt is a revolutionary new I/O technology that delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second and can support every important I/O standard which is ideal for the new MacBook Pro." Besides those updates, you're looking at roughly the same MacBook Pro you could buy a week ago. The refresh is exactly that, a refresh, not really an overhaul of the computer. The computers are available now, and start at $1199 for the 13-inch base model. Anyone thinking about buying a MacBook Pro now that they've seen the update?

Samsung Galaxy S 4G Review
Samsung Galaxy S 4G Review (T-Mobile) The Samsung Galaxy S 4G is the first entrant to the line with HSPA+ support, but is the speed supported by a quality device worthy of your two-year contract? Samsung's Galaxy S 4G is finally here, but is it going to live up to the hype? Will you be happy with it a few months into your contract let alone two years from now? Surprisingly, yes, you probably will be happy with the Galaxy S 4G. We're giving it 4.5 stars out of 5 based on call quality, the updates to Samsung's TouchWiz interface (especially the tray), the overall rich look of the Super AMOLED screen and more. This isn't to say that all aspects of the phone are perfect. The body feels fairly solid due to its size, but the back is just a plastic shell, and feels like it could go flying off without a whole lot of prompting, a big drawback to the overall sturdiness feeling of the handset. Even though TouchWiz has received some modifications, it still isn't the best Google interface out there. Flash is sluggish despite the rest of the system being pretty snappy, and we'd actually recommend you shut it off and forgo it. Here are all of the specs in case you aren't familiar with them. Samsung Galaxy S 4G Specs * Android 2.2 Froyo * TouchWiz 3.0 UI * 4-inch Super AMOLED (480 x 800) screen * Gorilla Glass display * 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application Processor * Accelerometer * GPS * Internal Memory: 1GB ROM, 512 MB RAM * microSD, up to 32GB, 16GB card included * Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g

Specs-wise, it offers an 800 MHz processor, 4.3-inch display, 5-megapixel camera, and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Despite the decent specifications and the fact that it's a demo unit, it was incredibly slow at even the most basic tasks. Here's to hoping that the kinks are worked out before the phone is released in May of 2011 to "markets worldwide." A new feature is HTC Scribe, which allows the user to write on the display with the included stylus. The unibody construction is quite nice, but it'll be a tough sell against other devices like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and LG Optimus Pad. AT&T; Vs. T-Mobile 4G Showdown
4G Showdown: HTC Inspire 4G vs Samsung Galaxy S 4G - AT&T; Vs. T-Mobile www.technobuffalo.com The war between cellular carriers in the United States has become all about 4G speeds, but who truly is the winner between AT&T; and T-Mobile? It seems you can't go anywhere on TV or online any more without seeing some sort of advertisement for a cellular carrier's 4G network. These networks promise you crazy speeds that would put most home Internet connection speeds to shame, but what is the reality? And which is truly faster? Our own Jon Rettinger decided to pit AT&T; and T-Mobile against one another to see which network was truly faster. For AT&T; he used an HTC Inspire and for T-Mobile he went with the Motorola Galaxy S 4G. He conducted five tests over the course of two and a half hours on Feb. 18th starting at 7 AM, and these are the results he got: (all speeds in Mbps) AT&T; T-Mobile Down Up Down Up Test #1 1.3 .4 2.8 1.4 Test #2 1.2 .3 2.7 1.5 Test #3 3.2 .4 2.8 1.8 Test #4 1.3 .7 2.4 1.5 Test #5 1.4 .6 2.8 1.6 The speeds shown in the video above were from tests conducted at 4:30 PM on Feb. 20th. As you can see, while T-Mobile was easily the winner, neither network came close to what they promise. T-Mobile has been saying that it can hit as fast 21 Mbps, but it appears you have to be in just the right place to get those speeds. AT&T;'s network is supposed to deliver around 7.2 Mbps, so going by percentages it actually did better. On the upload front, according to AndroidCentral

Motorola Atrix 4G Unboxing & First Impressions www.technobuffalo.com The Motorola ATRIX has finally arrived on AT&T;, and, as always, we have an unboxing video for you. The ATRIX was one of the most talked about devices at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year, mainly due to its innovative docking options. Whether it was the media dock or the laptop version that turns the phone into the brain of a laptop, people were interested in it. While the pricing of the phone is in line with your usual phones of these specs, the docks have made people a little less than happy with their pricing. Add in that to use Firefox on the laptop dock requires a higher data plan, and people got even less thrilled with the situation. Only time will tell how people end up feeling about the handset, but for now it is definitely a solid Android 2.2 phone. Here are the specs again if you need a reminder. Motorola Atrix 4G: Laptop Dock Demo & Unboxing
Motorola Atrix 4G: Laptop Dock Hands On www.technobuffalo.com The Motorola Atrix laptop dock is one of the biggest selling points of the new phone, but is it really as exciting as it looks? When the Atrix was introduced last month at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), not only was the phone itself one of the most talked about items due its dual-core power, but the Atrix laptop dock also got its fair share of love as well. We got to spend some time with the dock at CES, and while it impressed us on first glance, getting it into a real world environment is always going to change things. Overall we still find the operating system to be elegant to look at, the keys responsive - albeit scaled down - and a fairly build all around, but yet we are still left going, "why?" The dock has no brain of its own, so it is only usable when the phone is plugged in to it. If you're going to carry around something of that size with you, shouldn't it at least have its own brain that the phone somehow enhances? If you're going to carry around something that large, why go with underpowered when you could carry a tablet, netbook or an actual laptop? Yes, there is a definite cool factor to it, but the first time you try to do something resource intensive, you're going to suddenly remember you're really using a smartphone, dual-core powered or not. You can buy it bundled with the phone through AT&T; for $499, although Radio Shack is selling the bundle for $479 currently, which works the dock out to

gadget reviews : HTC Desire S Hands-On Part 1

HTC Desire S Hands-On Part 1
The original HTC Desire was an award-winning and highly acclaimed device. It's no wonder HTC wanted to do a successor. The just-announced Desire S is running with very similar specs to the original Desire: it has a 3.7 WVGA Super AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz CPU, 768MB of RAM, and 1.1 GB of ROM. After getting some hands-on time with the Desire S, we were not really overwhelmed. It's just a Desire refresh. Of course it has HTC Sense in its newer iteration as well as Android 2.3 Gingerbread but 1GHz Snapdragon is something everybody thought HTC might be dropping. Anyways, build quality is good, as you'd expect from HTC, it's just that we don't see that much innovation from HTC lately.

gadget reviews : HTC Incredible S Hands-On

HTC Incredible S Hands-On
The new Incredible S from HTC is basically a mild spec bump from the original Incredible. The WVGA screen is 4" and uses a Super LCD panel. It packs a 1GHz Snapdragon single core CPU with 768MB of RAM and 1.1GB of ROM. It has unique rotating navigation keys so that the buttons re-orient themselves when you switch into landscape. First impressions of the device? The front facing camera is definitely a great addition if you're into video calling and its 1.3-megapixel sensor size is appealing. One of the flaws with the device we had our hands-on with, and basically all Incredible S devices on display, was that they ran Android 2.2 Froyo. HTC told us it will be upgradeable to Gingerbread post launch. Definitely the new Sense version and some new HTC widgets are a great feature but, let's not forget about the Intelligent Buttons (the capacitive ones) at the bottom which rotate when in landscape mode to give you a better feel for them (sort of a gimmick).

gadget reviews : HTC Wildfire S Hands-On

HTC Wildfire S Hands-On
The new HTC Wildfire S is a refresh of the original Wildfire. It has the same 3.2" HVGA 480x320 display, and packs a 600MHz CPU with 512MB of RAM and ROM. After spending some time with the device, we think it's just your typical, low-end, budget Android smartphone from HTC. Apart from the fact that we've spotted the device in an early HTC ad, there's nothing realy huge to it, especially if we talk about the 600MHz processor. Even so, it seems to operate rather well, fluid experience, good build quality and there will be several colors available so everyone might find the one appealing to him or her. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the new Sense which should simplify the experience but, as we said, it's just your typical Wildfire Gingerbread edition.
